Onshore Oil & Gas Innovations In Spill Containment 2019 Brochure

Surface water spills are the main source of groundwater pollution by onshore oil and gas operations

This document provides guidance to Onshore Oil & Gas Site Operators on the content of improvement conditions plans (ICPs) for varied permits. It outlines what they consider the Best Available Technique (BAT) for spill containment.

As part of an environmental permit application oil & gas operators must provide information to show how they will protect the underlying ground, surface water and groundwater. This should include information on the use of containment systems and the management of site surface water runoff. This includes:

  • Primary containment – tanks, drums, IBC’s in which any liquids are stored
  • Secondary containment – bunding of contaminated water tanks and berms around working areas
  • Tertiary containment – installing an impermeable liner across the site prior to the start of drilling¬† operations
  • Verification and testing of containment systems
  • Repair or replacement of containment systems
  • Drainage
